Friends of the Library

As last year rapidly came to a close, members of the Benjamin Branch Friends of the Library (FOL) amid the hustle and bustle of the season were planning activities for 2013. Even though there were many successful events completed in 2012, there are many more being considered for the New Year.

ESSAY CONTEST
As all the area private and public schools were informed, the 16th Annual Writing for Literacy Essay Contest for students in the 4th, 8th and 10th grades is presently in progress. Completed essays should have been submitted by December 21. Hopefully, student writers were able to meet this deadline. Winners from each school choosing to participate will be announced in January or early February. For more information, please contact Katherine Johnson at (619) 533-3971.

BOOK SALES
To be able to financially support events at the library, the Friends regularly hold used book sales. Tentative dates for 2013 are January 26, April 27, July 27 and Oct. 26. All sales are held from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Current members of Benjamin Branch FOL will be invited to shop Jan. 25 from 3:30 to 5 PM. Avoid the rush; join FOL now!

OASIS CLASSES
Three free classes have been scheduled for 2013. The first class will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM in the Community Room. The topic is entitled "Laughter Yoga" and will be presented by Michael Coleman, a certified laughter Yoga leader and teacher. (Everyone can do it). No special yoga clothing or mats are required -- who knew? Since everyone can use a little laughter now, please call Oasis at (619) 574-0674 or the library at (619) 533-3970 to reserve a seat. Additional classes are set for Feb. 12 and March 12.

NEWS TO USE
At the last meeting, new chapter officers were elected. They are: Joan Curry, president; Susie Gretler, vice-president; Arminda Orozco, secretary and Shelia Padgett, treasurer. Our next FOL meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 1:00 PM in the Community Room. Meetings are regularly held the 4th Wednesday of the month. New members are always welcome!

Thank you for your community involvement.   If you subscribe to Ewatch or Arjis crime mapping you will no longer be able to access these sources of crime information.  Please use this website instead: http://www.crimemapping.com/.

Click here to see a press release from the county for the countywide change to one user friendly and current technology.  I think you’ll be pleased with the new format.

From the Office of San Diego City Councilmember Scott Sherman

Councilmember Scott Sherman

Thank you Allied Gardens
Since taking office on December 3, I have been working hard to address the important issues and concerns facing District 7. Now I want to take a moment to personally thank the residents of Allied Gardens for providing me with the opportunity to serve as your representative on the City Council and update you on my citywide and neighborhood specific priorities.

As a City, we must remain focused on protecting our communities via increased law enforcement and crime prevention, implementing fiscal reforms, fixing our crumbling roads, restoring neighborhood services, saving our open spaces and improving our parks. I intend to work closely with my colleagues on the City Council to ensure that these initiatives move forward.

However, my main priority as your councilmember is to enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods and respond to community needs for the betterment of District 7. Further, as a small business owner, I believe that the City must do a better job of addressing customer service issues. With this in mind, please know that my office will always be available to serve you. My Allied Gardens Community Representative, Jon Staab, will assist you with any questions or concerns that may come up. Please feel free to contact him at (619)236-6677 or via email at jstaab@sandiego.gov
Once again, thank you for your support. I look forward to partnering with all of you as we continue to work together for the benefit of Allied Gardens and the neighborhoods of District 7.
In Service,
Scott Sherman
Allied Gardens Resident and City Councilman
