San Diego and Hoover High Schools Golf Tournament at Admiral Baker Golf Course
On Monday, May 7, 2012, the 19th annual Caver-Cardinal charitable golf tournament and dinner auction will be held at Admiral Baker Golf Course to benefit two of San Diego’s oldest high schools.
The tournament will consist of a four-person scramble shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner and auction. The cost for golf and dinner is $150.
Sponsoring this event are the San Diego High School and Hoover High School Foundations, nonprofit organizations that raise money for programs at these inner-city schools with a combined enrollment of over 5000 students from culturally diverse backgrounds. Proceeds from the event are used to provide scholarships and support for special academic and athletic programs at the schools. Last year each school received $8,600. A portion of the golf fees, as well as money raised by selling tickets for raffle prizes and items auctioned at the dinner following the golf tournament will be shared on a 50-50 basis by the foundations.
The organizing committee, comprised of San Diego and Hoover High School alums, is seeking golfers as well as donors of auction and raffle items. Donations are tax deductible.
For more information, call Penny Guarnotta at 619/440-7255 or Ed Ott at 619/670-0694. A golf registration form can be requested through CaverCardinal@gmail.com.

It appears that March and April will be months of many changes. Already we have experienced winter - hail, snow, rain, thunder, wind and cold - and then spring and summer with sun and 90 degree plus temperatures -- all within the first four days of March! We have had Daylight Saving Time and the official beginning of spring. Another huge change for the Benjamin Library will be the retirement of our Head Librarian, Linda Moskovics, at the end of March.
The 15th Annual Writing for Literacy Essay Contest for 2012 is over. Area judges have chosen local winners. The 8th grade winners were from Ms. Fitzpatrick's class at Saint Therese Academy. The students selected were Julia Sperrazzo, Alvaro Luken, and Hannah Teves. Our local celebration honoring these students was held March 13th at the library. Awards were presented by the Benjamin Library FOL, by the San Diego Public Library FOL, and by City Council member Marti Emerald. Our winners' essays have been submitted for the city-wide competition -- winners to be announced in May. Congratulations!
The next FREE Oasis class presented by our FOL chapter will be held Wednesday, March 21st from 1:00 to 3:00PM in the community room of the library. The lecture entitled "Home Decor and the Use of Symbolism in Feng Shui" will be given by Kathryn Holt. You will learn how" Feng Shui Masters read and interpret the symbolism within a home and how you can apply this knowledge to your own living space." Spring is a good time to get some new decorating ideas. Like all of our Oasis presentations, this one is fully underwritten by our FOL. To reserve your seat, please call Oasis at (619) 574-0674 or the library at (619) 533-3970. The last class of this series will be April 18th and is entitled "A Taste of Ta'i Chi/Qi Gong . This is a "full-menu class to reduce stress" presented by Lesli Johnson Leech (MS). Further classes for fall and summer are being arranged.
There is much "News to Use".
* The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of our FOL chapter in January: President, Joan Curry; Vice-president, Anne Lee; Treasurer ,Shelia Padgett; Secretary, Susie Gretler.
* Tentative dates for future gently-used book sales are Saturday, April 28th and July 28th from 9:30 to 1:00.
* Friends of the Library membership. For more information call Karen Carter at (619) 229-0739. New friends are always welcomed!
